Navistar LPGA Classic: Lorena Ochoa successfully defended her title, overcoming early troubles to shoot a 2-under 70 for a four-stroke victory over Michelle Wie and Brittany Lang yesterday in Prattville, Ala.
Ochoa finished at 18-under 270 to snap an 11-start winless streak dating to the Corona Championship in late April. She has three victories this year and 27 overall on the LPGA Tour.
Alexis Thompson, 14, shot her second straight 74 to tie for 27th at 6 under. She opened with rounds of 65 and 69 to share the second-round lead.
Turning Stone Resort Championship: Matt Kuchar and Vaughn Taylor were still tied after two holes in a sudden-death playoff when play was suspended yesterday in Verona, N.Y., because of darkness, forcing the tournament to finish today.
U.S. Mid-Amateur: Walker Cup player Nathan Smith and Mike McCoy shared medalist honors, finishing two rounds of stroke-play qualifying at 3-under 140 yesterday in Kiawah Island, S.C.
Smith shot a 4-under 68 at Cassique, and McCoy had a 1-over 70.
The top 64 qualified for match play in the tournament for players 25 and older.
Among those qualifying was Uly Grissette of Clemmons, who shot a 72 and had a two-day total of 144.
b>U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur: Mina Hardin shot a 3-under 69 to share medalist honors yesterday in Ocala, Fla.
Hardin, a reinstated amateur from Fort Worth, Texas, who was the first Mexican player on the LPGA Tour, matched Laura Ladden, Jennifer Lucas and Meghan Stasi at 2-over 146.
The top 64 qualified for match play in the tournament for players 25 and older.
